Bottomless Portafilters: A 58mm Handle Won’t Fit Every 58mm Machine

A bottomless portafilter is a handle with the bottom cut away. No spouts, no metal underneath the basket. You watch the espresso come straight out of the coffee bed and into the cup.

That sounds like a gimmick. It isn’t. It’s the cheapest way to see what your puck prep is really doing.

What You See

On a good shot, drops appear evenly across the bottom of the basket, merge in the middle and fall as one steady, honey-coloured stream. On a bad one, the shot tells on you. A pale, blonde patch on one side means water found an easy path there. Thin side jets, the infamous spurts, mean channels have opened in the puck. A stream that drifts off centre usually means an uneven tamp.

A spouted portafilter hides all of that. The coffee mixes on the way down and you only taste the result. With a bottomless handle you can fix the cause: grind, stir, tamp. Our puck prep guide and tamper guide are the usual cures.

It also gives you more room under the basket, so a cortado glass or a scale fits easily.

The Mess

Spurts spray. When a shot channels, coffee lands on the drip tray, the scale and occasionally your shirt. That’s the point, but it means you need decent puck prep before you buy one, or you’ll spend the first week wiping things down. Put the cup close under the basket while you learn.

Sizing: Diameter Isn’t Enough

Match the basket size first:

  • 58mm: E61 machines, the Gaggia Classic and the Rancilio Silvia.
  • 54mm: Breville’s Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Bambino Plus and Infuser. Breville’s Oracle and Dual Boiler use 58mm, so they need a different handle.
  • 51mm: De’Longhi Dedica models such as the EC680, EC685 and EC885, which use three ears.

Then check the ears, the lugs that lock the handle into the group. This is where people get caught. “58mm” doesn’t mean it fits. The Gaggia Classic’s lugs sit differently from an E61 group, so a standard E61 bottomless handle won’t lock into a Gaggia. You need one sold as Gaggia-fit. Rancilio handles are generally listed for the Silvia family only. Breville needs a Breville-specific 54mm handle. Always look for your machine’s name in the listing, not just the diameter.

Handles Worth a Look

  • Normcore 58mm Bottomless Portafilter: listed for E61 machines and the Flair 58, with an 18 g basket included.
  • Normcore 54mm Bottomless Portafilter: made for Breville’s Barista Express family, with an 18 g basket.
  • Normcore 51mm Bottomless Portafilter: three-ear fit for the De’Longhi Dedica, and the upgrade that makes real tuning possible on that machine.
  • Gaggia bottomless portafilter: the safe choice for the Gaggia Classic E24, since it’s made to fit.
  • Crema Coffee Products 58mm: a lower-cost E61 option with a double basket.

Check the Basket Too

Many bottomless handles take deeper baskets than spouted ones, and some come with a fairly basic basket. Make sure the basket you’ll use leaves room under the shower screen. Pairing a new handle with a precision basket is common, and it’s a good pairing, because the even holes make the bottomless view easier to read.

Your shots won’t taste better the day it arrives. They’ll taste better a week later, once you’ve seen what went wrong.
